- “:Þ”
- — Bigcat
Bigcat is a displacer beast and the beast companion of Copper. As a beast companion, she is played by both Tom and Matt Colville.
Description[]
- “It's not a displacer-beast-sized house!”
- — Matt Colville
Bigcat is a displacer beast, large cat-like creatures with six legs and a pair of long tentacles sprouting from their shoulders. While displacer beasts are usually about 9 feet long, Bigcat has been described as being 6 feet long, implying that she is not fully grown.
Despite her menacing appearance, Bigcat acts like a domesticated cat, hence how she got her name.
Abilities[]
Bigcat's ability scores are as followed:
STR | DEX | CON | INT | WIS | CHA |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
18 (+4) | 15 (+2) | 16 (+3) | 6 (-2) | 12 (+1) | 8 (-1) |
As a beast companion, Bigcat loses her innate Avoidance ability and her multiattack action (though can still multiattack with three ferocity) but in return gains the abilities of the Monster Tamer.
Biography[]
Bigcat presumably joined the Chain of Acheron along with Copper. When asked in the first episode how and where he got her, Copper simply replied:
- “I'm just the best ranger there is.”
In A Sapphire Sky, when Scipio asked how he get a displacer beast and if he raised Bigcat from pup he replied:
- “It is a cat but I raised it better than most people do.”
“Red Sky at Morning” (Episode 1)[]
She was present during the Chain's failed assassination of Mortum in Blackbottom, and Copper used her as a mount to help keep the standard high and guide the Chain to the docks. When a mob of civilians attempted to commandeer the ship the Chain was using to escape the city, Bigcat was integral to the display that scared the mob off.
Behind the Scenes[]
When Tom was creating his character, he wanted to play a ranger with a companion of some kind but did not know that he could have a monster as a companion. At first, he thought a Bulette for a pet would be neat, but he settled on a Displacer Beast.
Bigcat is often called the Chief Mouser of the Chain of Acheron, in reference to the role cards all the senior officers hold. Whenever a senior officer is in danger of dying, the players often joke that Bigcat will receive a field promotion and take their role.
